After a prison stretch and early release, prominent mob turncoat Sydney Bifulco retires to a cabin on the Delaware River to fulfill his dream of the quiet, rural life where he can pursue his newfound passion for fly fishing. He soon finds it's a lot more difficult than it looks in the magazines, especially with forces from his past trying either to whack him or woo him. Enter a cast of local screwballs and a dead hit man in the driveway. The body goes missing, and an incriminating videotape attracts a rogue cop, a gangland hypnotist, and skin flick impresarios. An elaborate shell game develops, and the entire town of Hellbender Eddy becomes embroiled in a quest for the missing tape. It takes an iced carp and a game of chicken on a train trestle high above the river to finally set things straight - and to solve the fiery car wreck murder of an innocent woman many years past.
“If Carl Hiaasen wrote for
The Sopranos,
it might be half as good as this….A page-turner that’s part wicked
humor and part just plain wicked.”
—Lee Child
“A black-humored crime novel that can sit comfortably on the same
shelf with the works of Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard….A fast, fun
dip into the Crime-Fiction-With-An-Attitude sub-sub-genre.”—Mystery

M. Wiprud's SLEEP WITH THE FISHES is a wild
and crazy fish tale. This story is filled
with the same type of fun and zany
characters that I love in his other books,
such as PIPSQUEAK, STUFFED and CROOKED. I
can't wait to see what Wiprud comes up with
next. —Jory

ONLY SUCKERS GET CAUGHT
Wiseguy Sid “Sleep” Bifulco doesn’t need no stinkin’ witness
protection program. The mobster-turned-snitch, who always put his
victims gently to sleep before whacking them, did his prison time
and now has a new rural hideaway and a new avocation: trout fishing
in a scenic river valley.
Except that a bunch of local yokels won’t leave him alone.
From a sexy trout dealer in crimson hiking boots to a cop married to
a pregnant porn star, everybody in this little town has an angle, a
grudge or a crush on somebody. And Sid needs to figure out these
yahoos fast—because with a vicious Mafia killer on his trail, a
warden on his doorstep, and a highly incriminating videotape making
the rounds, it turns out that the simple life isn’t so simple after
all...
“The Godfather meets Carl Hiaasen in this darkly humorous
meeting of the Mob and fishing —how's that for a combination!
Sleep with the Fishes
is a good, quick, amusing read.”—Mystery
